Using drip irrigation systems with hydroponic cultivation methods : A selection guide and advice for installation, implementation and maintenance
Let’s begin by reminding ourselves that this, strictly speaking, is an agricultural practice aimed at growing a plant without water, often more simply called « soil-less » cultivation. In these types of crop-growing techniques, which can currently be applied to vegetables (tomatoes, cucumbers, peppers…) or many kinds of commercialised cut flowers or pot plants, the soil is replaced by an inert pH neutral substrate (rock wool, coconut fibre, peat, pine bark, pozzolana, clay granules…)! Generally speaking, the crops are placed in a protected environment (green houses or under plastic) where the climate is also rigorously controlled (moisture, temperature, sunlight) and irrigation is managed in a methodical and stringent manner (required because of the shallow rooting zone).
