The distinctive operating feature of a pivot is the evenness of the amounts of water applied from one end of the pivot to the other. In fact, the longest span from the centre must, at the same time as the longest span, cover a longer distance and thus irrigate a greater surface area, while applying exactly the same amount of water to the crop.
