New study on the water crisis in agriculture by Farm Europe

On 9 September, Farm Europe published a new study “Water crisis: a European plan to be implemented region by region”. This study was presented in an event at the European Parliament hosted by MEP Crespo Díaz (EPP, Spain) entitled “Water crisis in agriculture: time to move from words to action” on 8 September.

This study provides a regional mapping of water constraints across European agriculture, analysing agricultural systems, agroecosystem health and hydroclimatic conditions.

Its findings reveal significant regional differences in water-related challenges, ranging from structural aridification in the Mediterranean to seasonal imbalances and emerging vulnerabilities in Northern and Central Europe. As a result, a one-size-fits-all approach is inadequate.

The study therefore calls for a strong European strategy implemented through differentiated regional approaches. It also emphasises that healthy soils and resilient agroecosystems are

fundamental to sustaining the water cycle and enhancing Europe's hydroclimatic resilience.
