The Urban canopy of Barcelona

Situated at the intersection of three main avenues: Diagonal, Gran Via and Meridiana, the Plaça de les Glòries square has, up to now, been a junction and roundabout for the traffic entering and leaving the city, with a small round green space, raised in the middle and amusingly referred to as the ‘Doughnut’ by the people of Barcelona. This noisy and polluted space was completely unsuitable for pedestrians. Being located between the forward-looking district of Eixample and the future green corridor that will connect the parks of Trinitat, Sagrera and Ciutadella, Glories represented an opportunity for the emergence of a garden square, a promenade and a leisure area looking out on to the city and acting as a haven for biodiversity.
